TomTom have been making sat nav systems for years but if you haven’t updated in a while then the TomTom Go Live 1005 might surprise you in its ease of use. The new touch gestures make this unit very responsive indeed and should be instantly recognisable to anyone who has used a touch screen smartphone such as the iPhone.
In many ways, the GO Live has taken many important lessons from the smartphone revolution. The TomTom Live membership allows the driver to access traffic information and the nearest businesses provided by Google Maps. This means that the much more extensive Google database is available to users instead of previously relying on the notoriously haphazard databases provided by companies such as TomTom.
We found certain features such as the ability to locate parking spaces, location of speed cameras and to edit the map as particularly useful. As a result, there were noticeably less occasions where one would find a road which didn’t exist on the map (although this still did happen from time to time).
Furthermore, the idea of live traffic reporting has been completely re-envisioned and is the best that we have ever seen on a satellite navigation system. There is a lot of information about the cause of the delay, the estimated time and potential alternatives.
Although the features on this sat nav are impressive and well implemented, it does come at a price and is by no means perfect. Some features have been removed from previous models such as the ability to add your own POIs, which makes a big difference particularly to advanced users.
Nonetheless, if you have a bit more cash to splash then this unit is well worth it and you will see the difference.
